About us

A community-owned, independent radical bookshop rooted in Durham since 2011.

Peoples Bookshop Interior

People’s Bookshop began as an alternative to mainstream bookselling. It grew into a place for readers, activists and trade unionists to meet, talk and organise.

Our Journey to Empowerment

Nestled in the historic Saddler’s Yard, an attic turned sanctuary for radical thinking, People’s Bookshop has been rewriting the narrative of community bookstores since 2011. It was the brainchild of Ben Sellers – a political, trade union, and anti-racist activist – emerged as a quirky alternative to mainstream book retailers. Ben, inspired by his days at Waterstones, envisioned a hub for both intellectual exploration and grassroots activism.

Though it began as a one-man venture, its allure as a community space drew like-minded individuals who soon formed an informal “bookshop collective.” Over the years, this collective evolved organically, guided by a shared love for the written word and the radical ideals the shop represented.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic posed an existential threat to the bookshop. Lockdown nearly extinguished its flame, but rather than admitting defeat, Ben and veteran activist Vin McIntyre rallied together to chart a new course. Their vision was to transform the shop into a formal co-operative and secure premises that would be accessible to all.

This initiative gained traction through a detailed survey, drawing responses from nearly 500 voices, from longtime patrons to intrigued newcomers. The verdict was clear: People’s Bookshop was a cultural cornerstone, and Durham would be diminished without it. This resounding support culminated in the creation of a manifesto, outlining the path forward for the beloved establishment. But there was also a clarion call for street-level premises.

People’s Bookshop is more than a retailer; it is a testament to the power of community and resilience. Its journey from attic anonymity to a bastion of activism inspires anyone who believes in the transformative power of collective action. The Manifesto can be viewed here.

2024. A New Chapter: From Attic to High Street

In what can only be described as a fortuitous twist of fate, People’s Bookshop found a new home at 19 High Street in Durham in August 2024. This opportunity arose almost magically; just as our attic landlord terminated our lease, an empty space in the nearby Prince Bishops shopping centre became available at an affordable rent, owing to an impending redevelopment.

The move brought a mix of hope and trepidation. The team faced daunting challenges: sustaining operations seven days a week to cover higher rental costs, hiring a full-time manager, rallying enough volunteers, and ensuring the shelves were stocked with donated books. Yet, against the odds, everything aligned perfectly. Much of this success is due to Nancy, our brilliant store manager, working with our loyal and hardworking team of volunteers.

As part of our evolution, People’s Bookshop registered as a Community Benefit Society (CBS) in July 2024, solidifying our commitment to reinvesting profits into community organisations. But the shop’s aspirations extend far beyond financial contributions. We aim to transform our space into a vibrant community hub, a place where people can gather, connect and collaborate on addressing pressing societal issues.

The Future: Forging Connections and Uniting Community Through Radical Vision

People’s Bookshop is set to break new ground in 2026, with the launch of an exciting Membership scheme. This initiative invites anyone who aligns with our mission to become a part-owner of our Charitable Community Benefit Society (CCBS) by purchasing one £1 share and paying a small monthly or annual subscription. In essence, it is a member co-operative. Members will elect the Bookshop’s Board of Directors. More details can be found on our ‘Own Your Community Bookshop’ page.

As the only radical bookseller in the region, we have carved out a unique niche, offering one of the finest selections of used books as well as many new books. Beyond an extensive range of academic and leisure titles, People’s Bookshop continues to champion its specialties – local and working-class history, political and economic ideas, and social, climate and international justice.

However, the future remains uncertain, as the store’s current premises face demolition in the near future. We will need the community’s support and a touch of luck to secure a suitable alternative location.
